New York Trip

By Rebecca Yener ·

New York City has always been a special place for me. Like so many immigrants, New York was the first city I landed in when I came to the United States.

I’ve been back many times, but this city is big enough to explore over and over again.

This was my second time bringing my daughter to New York. On our last visit, she had just returned from China, so she was jet-lagged and sleepy. This Labor Day, I decided to take her back to really enjoy the city. I picked September because I thought the weather would be nicer.

Day 1 · Noodles, the museum, and pizza

Our first stop was Xi’an Famous Foods. To my surprise, she liked the noodles!

Then we visited the American Museum of Natural History. How tiny a dinosaur’s brain is!! By the end, we were tired.

Then we had pizza—of course, New York pizza.

Day 2 · Up above the city

On the second day, we visited the High Line, Hudson Yards, the Vessel, and Edge. My daughter told me she didn’t remember being there last time. We climbed the Vessel, and the upper levels were quite scary!

Then we went to Edge. Here’s where my little math brain got to work—or you can call it girl math.

The ticket for the 100th-floor observation deck was $47, or about $50 with tax. The minimum spend on the 101st floor was $60 per person. With tax, tips, and everything else, I paid $155 for the two of us. Compared with about $100 for two observation-deck tickets, that meant lunch “only” cost me $55!

We enjoyed the view and the observation deck below. Lunch was nice too, although I had already eaten a very heavy breakfast.

A night on Broadway

That night, we went to Broadway to watch The Lion King. Twenty-eight years and still running!

My first Broadway show was Cats, and I found the plot very confusing!!! My second was Moulin Rouge!, but I didn’t understand why they were singing pop music. I didn’t like it at all. The Lion King, though, was very good!

Day 3 · One last walk, one last coffee

The third day was light. We walked across the Brooklyn Bridge, had lunch, checked out Wall Street, and stopped for my last coffee before heading to the airport.

Five coffee stops in three days

I visited Blue Bottle Coffee about five times in three days. I love the cortado with oat milk! I wish they would open in Florida soon!!
